The 18 Club

Its official, as if it wasn’t already, Serena is one of the greatest of all time. With her 6th US Open title, Serena has achieved 18 major singles titles. She has now joined an elite club of tennis legends, the 18 Club, whose members include Chrissie Evert and Martina Navratilova. This small roster of tennis greats is only surpassed in the Open Era by Steffi Graf who holds the record of 22 grand slam titles. While incredibly impressive, greatness can’t be described by numbers alone. Her dominance on the court and revolutionizing of the female athletic form makes her a legend whether or not she wins 25 grand slam titles or plays until she is 36 years old. Serena’s performance and career transcends the norm. She is an enigma, an inspiration and an icon. The embodiment of what humans can achieve if they believe and work hard enough. Today Serena was compared to Evert and Navratilova. Tomorrow she will be compared to Jordan and Ali. But in the end, there is only one Serena Williams.
